The divers who discovered the \u201cmystery shipwreck\u201d said the \u201cnear-perfect\u201d ship they found on the Baltic Sea floor in 2020 was \u201cmiraculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now,\u00a0<em>that<\/em>\u00a0mysterious Baltic Sea ship that was discovered between the mainland of Finland and the Estonian island of Hiiumaa has been identified. The Badewanne dive team that found the Baltic Sea wreck consists of voluntary divers of different nationalities. The team specializes in documenting wrecks in the Gulf of Finland. The identity of the ship remained unknown until a team of deep-sea archaeological divers discovered \u201ccarved motifs on the transom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Archaeologist Niklas Eriksson of Stockholm University, who led the team of divers that solved the mystery of the 400-year-old\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/news-history-archaeology\/danish-warship-0014306\">sunken ship\u00a0<\/a>, said the archaeologists are now celebrating a \u201cmiraculous breakthrough.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/ancient-places-europe\/curonians-0014115\">Men from the Land of Amber: The Shocking History of the Fierce Curonians<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/artifacts-ancient-technology\/undersea-mystery-accidental-discovery-ghost-ship-baltic-sea-005992\">An Undersea Mystery: The Accidental Discovery of the Ghost Ship in the Baltic Sea<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An article on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/divernet.com\/2021\/08\/07\/divers-flip-identifies-1600s-shipwreck\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>Diver Net\u00a0<\/em><\/a>quotes Minna Koivikko, from the Finnish Heritage Agency, who said the discovery \u201crestores one\u2019s faith in miracles.\u201d Koivikko revealed to the media that the ship was named \u201cSwan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, it is known the craft was built in 1636 AD, and the archaeologists believe that closer examinations of the transom will reveal the coat of arms for the ship\u2019s home port. (\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.handleproductions.com\/the-age-and-the-name-of-a-unique-fluit-wreck-in-the-baltic-sea-resolved\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>Handle Productions\u00a0<\/em><\/a><em>)<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>A Ghost Ship Symbolic Of Dutch Pride<\/h2>\n<p>Professor Eriksson said that while divers have found fragments of motifs on previous dives, now archaeologists \u201chave the entire composition.\u201d And with the newly discovered motifs the team of researchers can now identify the ship in the same way that people in the 17th century did, according to Dutch News, who also said this specific design of seaborne craft \u201chelped forge the Dutch Empire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cfluyt\u201d was a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/history\/forgotten-lost-or-destroyed-exploring-final-fate-famous-three-ships-led-columbus-006370\">three-masted vessel\u00a0<\/a>with a capacious hull, so designed to maximize her cargo capacity. It also had specially designed rigging so that smaller crews could hoist and maintain the sails, and this rig structure also enabled more space, and therefore cut operational costs. In the mid-17th century Dutch ships carried around half of all of Europe\u2019s produce and goods. The ship was functional in a period of European history that is known as \u201cThe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/history-important-events\/mauritius-conquests-naval-battles-piracy-and-long-awaited-independence-021738\">Dutch Golden Age\u00a0<\/a>\u201d and that nation\u2019s maritime power lasted until the late 17th century.<\/p>\n<p>Manders told Dutch News that the team of researchers invited amateur sleuths who are interested in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/ancient-places-asia\/qalat-al-bahrain-0011208\">maritime history\u00a0<\/a>to join in the search for more clues.
